There's Nu Place Like Home: 2020 Fall Recruitment

With the start of a new school year comes the excitement of the fall recruiting season. However, this year’s recruitment is met with a mixture of emotions. The unprecedented change to online classes and a reliance on zoom has instituted a change to a virtual recruiting season. Despite these adjustments, Pi Sigma Epsilon has embraced the upcoming year with a positive outlook and excitement for a new challenge.

VP of HR, Lauren Taras, and Director of Recruitment, Gabby Gick.

In the past, recruitment entailed a series of in-person sessions followed by opportunities to meet and chat with active members. Potential new members would sign up for group interviews, beginning the two-week process of joining the fraternity. The new approach to recruitment involved a complete switch to online forums and sessions. PNM’s would attend virtual information sessions, with opportunities to meet members through breakout rooms. The transition to online, although daunting, has not deterred the spirit of the recruitment team. VP of Recruitment Lauren Taras details the ways in which the sessions are personal and inclusive,

“Our biggest goal of our information sessions was to maintain quality connections with the PNM’s. We achieved this by creating unique breakout rooms and implementing trivia games to keep everyone engaged. As we have seen in the past, these meetings are the best way to start gaging personalities, for both the new members and ourselves.”

Taras mentions the hardest adjustment was overcoming technological problems. “Navigating zoom and communicating all directions via microphone proved a challenge to the process.” In order to overcome these issues and ensure a smooth transition, PSE’s recruitment team took impressive planning measures. “Warren and I would hold practice zoom speeches to the members of our fraternity. We practiced moving people into breakout rooms and created a dialogue conducive and inviting.”

In such unsettling times as now, finding security and a place of comfort is more important than ever. This year’s recruitment theme, “There’s NU Place Like Home” perfectly encapsulates the welcoming atmosphere of PSE. Our members navigate to Pi Sigma Epsilon because of the family culture; the theme resonates perfectly with the atmosphere of our club. As recruitment begins its final round of interviews, our members wait in anticipation for our new member class, even if it's on a zoom screen.
